​Opeenvolgende dagen waarop de regen met bakken uit de lucht valt, kunnen voor een welgemene verfrissing zorgen, maar net zo goed kunnen ze stevig inwerken op het gemoed. Het lijkt misschien contradictorisch maar om dit melancholisch gevoel te onderdrukken, kunnen ‘rainsongs’ wonderen verrichten. Gelukkig hoef je hiervoor niet urenlang in je ongetwijfeld immense platencollectie te grasduinen, want het Duitse Bear Family heeft met het album ‘The Rhythm Of The Rain’ de gedroomde soundtrack uitgebracht. 30 tijdloze tracks in diverse muziekgenres zorgen ervoor dat de regen ook een lach op je gezicht tovert. Vanzelfsprekend tref je hier een aantal ‘all time classics’ aan, zoals Dion met ‘Drip Drop’, ‘Just Walking In The Rain’ van Johnnie Ray, Carole Kings ‘It Might As Well Rain Until September’, B.J. Thomas met ‘Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head’, Gene Vincent met ‘Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain’ en The Everly Brothers met ‘Crying In The Rain’. Rays ‘Walking In The Rain’ sluit later in een doo-wopversie van The Prisonairs het album af. Maar vooraleer we zo ver zijn is er nog heel wat om van te genieten. Het is al meteen raak met het soulvolle ‘Raindrops’ van Dee Clark, een nummer uit 1961. Opvolger Irma Thomas zet met ‘It’s Raining’ meteen de toon voor een potje heerlijke meeslepende rhythm & blues. Nog meer rhythm & blues op topniveau volgt later met ‘Raining’ door Jerry Byrne en zeker met Christine Kittrell die aan ‘Ain’t Never Seen So Much Rain Before’ zelfs een snuifje jazz toevoegt. Eerder rauw klinkt Big Maybelles rhythm & blues ‘Rain Down Rain’. Een vat vol emoties is Billy ‘The Kid’ Emerson in ‘When It Rains It Pours’. Nummer dat zeker niet moet onderdoen voor zijn ‘signature song’ ‘Red Hot’.
En knappe slowblues presenteren dan weer El Pauling and Royal Abbit met ‘Raindrops Keep A-Fallin’’.
Country & Western komt aan bod via Bill Wimberley & The Country Rhythm Boys met ‘It Rains Rain’,  ‘Sittin’ Home Prayin’ For The Rain’ van Bobby Lord en ‘So What! Let It Rain!’ van Lefty Frizzell. Dat geldt ook voor George Jones die ‘Rain Rain (Rain Keeps Falling)’ zelfs van een beetje latin voorziet.
Voor doo-wop hoogstandjes zorgen The Royal Jokers met ‘September In The Rain’
Skiffle krijgt dan weer gestalte in ‘Face In The Rain’ van The Chass McDevitt Skiffle Group met formidabele zang van Nancy Whiskey. Voor een jazzy feel kan je terecht bij het instrumentale ‘Rain’ van Red Garland Trio. Ander knap instrumentaal werk volgt later met The Hap-Cats en hun door leadgitaar gestuurde ‘Raindrops’. ‘Rhythm Of The Rain’ van The Cascades ken je ongetwijfeld als ‘Ritme Van De Regen’ door Rob de Nijs.
Minder bekend maar wel super mooi gebracht door ‘Cile Turner is ‘Drizzlin’ Rain’. Een pareltje is ook ‘The Rain Comes Down’ van Johnny Burnettes oudste broer Dorsey Burnette
‘Over The Rainbow’ link je automatisch aan Judy Garland omdat zij het in 1939 in de film ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ introduceerde. Twintig jaren later bliezen Little Anthony and The Imperials het nummer nieuw leven in. Wat zij zoals je hier hoort met succes deden.
’30 Melodic Drops For Cloudy Days’ luidt de subtitel van deze uitgave. Beter kunnen wij het niet verwoorden. Misschien toch nog één tip…………je hoeft echt niet te wachten tot de hemelsluizen openen om van dit album te genieten. Tijdens het schrijven van deze recensie heerste er een hittegolf, maar met deze compilatie kon ik alvast genieten van de eerste op komst zijnde regenbui. Een aanrader!

Fortunately, you don't have to spend hours browsing through your undoubtedly immense record collection, because the German Bear Family has released the soundtrack of your dreams with the album 'The Rhythm Of The Rain'. 30 timeless tracks in various music genres ensure that the rain also puts a smile on your face. Naturally, you will find a number of 'all time classics' here, such as Dion with 'Drip Drop', 'Just Walking In The Rain' by Johnnie Ray, Carole King's 'It Might As Well Rain Until September', B.J. Thomas with 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head', Gene Vincent with 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' and The Everly Brothers with 'Crying In The Rain'. Ray's 'Walking In The Rain' later closes the album in a doo-wop version by The Prisonairs. But before we get that far, there is still a lot to enjoy. It immediately hits the spot with the soulful 'Raindrops' by Dee Clark, a song from 1961. Successor Irma Thomas immediately sets the tone for a game of wonderfully compelling rhythm & blues with 'It's Raining'. Even more rhythm & blues at top level follows later with 'Raining' by Jerry Byrne and certainly with Christine Kittrell who even adds a pinch of jazz to 'Ain't Never Seen So Much Rain Before'. Big Maybelle's rhythm & blues 'Rain Down Rain' sounds rather raw. Billy 'The Kid' Emerson is full of emotions in 'When It Rains It Pours'. Song that is certainly not inferior to his 'signature song' 'Red Hot'.
A beautiful slow blues is presented by El Pauling and Royal Abbit with 'Raindrops Keep A-Fallin''.
Country & Western is on top via Bill Wimberley & The Country Rhythm Boys with 'It Rains Rain', 'Sittin' Home Prayin' For The Rain' by Bobby Lord and 'So What! Let It Rain!' by Lefty Frizzell. This also applies to George Jones, who even adds a bit of Latin to 'Rain Rain (Rain Keeps Falling)'.
The Royal Jokers provide a doo-wop highlight with 'September In The Rain'.
Skiffle takes shape again in 'Face In The Rain' by The Chass McDevitt Skiffle Group with formidable vocals by Nancy Whiskey. For a jazzy feel you can go to the instrumental 'Rain' by Red Garland Trio. Other fine instrumental work follows later with The Hap-Cats and their lead guitar-driven 'Raindrops'.
Less known but beautifully performed by 'Cile Turner is 'Drizzlin' Rain'. Another gem is 'The Rain Comes Down' by Johnny Burnette's eldest brother Dorsey Burnette.
You automatically link 'Over The Rainbow' to Judy Garland because she introduced it in the 1939 film 'The Wizard Of Oz'. Twenty years later, Little Anthony and The Imperials revived the song. Which, as you can hear here, they did successfully.
'30 Melodic Drops For Cloudy Days' is the subtitle of this release. We couldn't say it better. Maybe one more tip…………you really don't have to wait for the rain to enjoy this album. There was a heat wave while writing this review, but with this compilation I already was able to enjoy the first upcoming rain shower. Recommended!
