​Het is al reeds een hele tijd geleden dat er nog een volume in de serie ‘Whip Masters Instrumentals’ op de markt kwam. Om precies te zijn was dat in 2021. Liefhebbers van steengoede instrumentale songs zullen dan zeker hun gading vinden bij het nu verschenen volume 4. Andermaal 30 kwalitatief hoogstaande instrumentals om van te smullen, maar die tevens ook moeiteloos je spieren in beweging zullen krijgen. Veel van de artiesten op dit album zal je niet kennen en van vele onder hen is in de Amerikaanse muziekgeschiedenis niets terug te vinden. Maakten zij daarom minder goede muziek? Helemaal niet, maar platenlabels hebben meestal de middelen niet om in alle talenten te investeren. Vaak kiezen zij er één of enkele artiesten uit, van wie zij hopen dat hun producties de kassa zouden doen rinkelen. Toch zal je op deze compilatie ook een aantal grote namen en oude bekenden zien passeren. We vliegen er meteen in met ‘Rocker’ een nummer waarbij de titel alleszeggend is. Subliem nummer dat The Montereys in 1962 opnamen voor het Cuca label. Bob Taylor and The Counts gaan verder op de door The Montereys ingeslagen weg met ‘Taylor’s Rock’. Meer van dat volgt er nog bij de vleet. Zoals bijvoorbeeld met The Downbeats en ‘Midnight Express’, inclusief een mooi samengaan van gitaar en sax. Lazy Lester ken je ongetwijfeld van zijn vocale nummers, maar hij was ook een meer dan begenadigde artiest op de bluesharp. Daarvan krijg je met ‘Lester’s Stomp’ een staaltje van zijn kunnen. Dave ‘Baby’ Cortez introduceert daarna ‘Hurricane’ met een denderende jungledrum. Gekend zijn ook Gus Jenkens en zijn orkest. Gus en zijn muzikanten zetten een voortreffelijk ‘Spanky’ neer, waarin de piano een prominente rol vervult. Een beetje richting vaudeville drijft dan weer eerder ‘The Stripper’ van Ernie Freeman. Country mag je verwachten van Little Jimmy Dickens with The Country Boys in ‘Red Wing’, met een tof stukje op fiddle. In hetzelfde genre blijven we met de alom gekende Bill Monroe, hier in ‘Wheel Hoss’, met ook weer die heerlijke opzwepende fiddle. Bekend, maar dan in een heel ander genre is Link Wray. Samen met zijn onafscheidelijke Raymen werkt hij zich met verve door ‘Turnpike U.S.A.’. Net als bij Wray speelt ook de gitaar de hoofdrol in ‘Swooney’ van The Gentry Brothers. ‘Red River Rock’ was een megahit voor Johnny and The Hurricanes. ‘Thunderbold’ ligt dan ook in het verlengde van die hit en mag rustig op hetzelfde niveau staan. ‘Let’s Go Trippin’’ ken je zeker in de versie van Dick Dale. Een surfsong die uit zijn pen vloeide en die je hier krijgt in de versie van Hot Doggers. Zij namen de song één jaar na die van Dale op, namelijk in 1963. Dat typische ‘twang’ gitaargeluid is onlosmakelijk verbonden met instrumentale nummers uit de fifties en begin sixties. Hoe dat bij de Rhythm Rockers klinkt hoor je in het toepasselijke ‘Twang’. Een razendsnelle boogie levert dan weer Jet Tones in zijn ‘Jet Tone Boogie’. Big Jay McNeely was een fenomenale Amerikaanse rhythm & bluessaxofonist. Luister zeker naar zijn talent op ‘The Squat’. Bij het Stax label fungeerden Booker T and The MGs als huisband en waren dan ook bij vele opnames van het label betrokken. ‘Green Onions’ is hun ‘signature song’, maar hun versie van ‘Twist And Shout’ mag er ook zijn. Meer bekend volk komt er ook met Earl Hooker. Hij was een meester op de gitaar, zoals je hier kan ervaren op ‘Dynamite’ dat hij voor Checker opnam in 1960. Bobby Vee scoorde menig hits, waaronder ‘Take Good Care Of My Baby’. Samen met The Shadows tekent hij hier voor ‘Flyin’ High’.
Kortom, net als de eerdere releases in de ‘Whip Masters’ serie, barst ook volume 4 weer van spetterende instrumentale nummers, met meestal de gitaren in de spots. Naast de gekende artiesten ontdek je andermaal indrukwekkende songs van onbekende artiesten. Artiesten die zonder reeksen als ‘Whip Masters Instrumentals’ meestal niet tot onze speakers zouden geraken. Gelukkig gebeurt dat nu wel!

It has been a long time since another volume in the 'Whip Masters Instrumentals' series came onto the market. To be precise, that was in 2021. Fans of excellent instrumental songs will certainly find something to their liking with the now released volume 4. Once again 30 high-quality instrumentals to enjoy, but which will also effortlessly get your muscles moving. You will not know many of the artists on this album and many of them have no trace in American music history. Is that why they made less good music? Not at all, but record labels usually do not have the intention to invest in all talent. They often choose one or a few artists whose productions they hope will make the cash register ring. However, you will also see a number of big names on this compilation. We jump straight into it with 'Rocker', a song where the title says it all. Sublime song that The Montereys recorded in 1962 for the Cuca label. Bob Taylor and The Counts continue on the path taken by The Montereys with 'Taylor's Rock'. More of that is yet to come. Such as with The Downbeats and 'Midnight Express', including a beautiful combination of guitar and sax. You undoubtedly know Lazy Lester from his vocal songs, but he was also a more than gifted artist on the blues harp. You get a sample of his skills with 'Lester's Stomp'. Dave 'Baby' Cortez then introduces 'Hurricane' with a thundering jungle drum. Gus Jenkens and his orchestra are also well known. Gus and his musicians perform an excellent 'Spanky', in which the piano plays a prominent role. 'The Stripper' by Ernie Freeman drifts a bit towards vaudeville. You can expect country from Little Jimmy Dickens with The Country Boys in 'Red Wing', with a great piece on fiddle. We remain in the same genre with the well-known Bill Monroe, here in 'Wheel Hoss', with that wonderful stirring fiddle. Link Wray is well-known, but in a completely different genre. Together with his inseparable Raymen, he works his way through 'Turnpike U.S.A.' with verve. Just like with Wray, the guitar also plays the leading role in 'Swooney' by The Gentry Brothers. 'Red River Rock' was a mega hit for Johnny and The Hurricanes. 'Thunderbold' is an extension of that hit and can easily be on the same level. You certainly know 'Let's Go Trippin'' in Dick Dale's version. A surf song that flowed from his pen and which you get here in the Hot Doggers version. They recorded the song one year after Dale's, namely in 1963. That typical 'twang' guitar sound is inextricably linked to instrumental songs from the fifties and early sixties. You can hear what that sounds like for the Rhythm Rockers in the appropriate 'Twang'. A lightning fast boogie delivers Jet Tones in his 'Jet Tone Boogie'. Big Jay McNeely was a phenomenal American rhythm & blues saxophonist. Be sure to listen to his talent on 'The Squat'. At the Stax label, Booker T and The MGs served as the house band and were involved in many of the label's recordings. 'Green Onions' is their signature song, but their version of 'Twist And Shout' is also impressive. More famous people are also coming with Earl Hooker. He was a master on the guitar, as you can experience here on 'Dynamite' that he recorded for Checker in 1960. Bobby Vee scored many hits, including 'Take Good Care Of My Baby'. Here he signs 'Flyin' High' together with The Shadows.
In short, just like the previous releases in the 'Whip Masters' series, volume 4 is also bursting with dazzling instrumental songs, with the guitars usually in the spotlight. In addition to well-known artists, you will once again discover impressive songs by unknown artists. Artists who would usually not make it to our speakers without series like 'Whip Masters'. Fortunately, that is happening
