​Wayne Cochran werd geboren op 10 mei 1939 geboren in Georgia en overleed op 21 november 2017 in Florida. Wayne raakte bekend door zijn immens wit pompadourkapsel en door de song ‘Last Kiss’, het laatste nummer dat hij schreef. Begon hij als een jonge rocker, dan evolueerde hij later tot een indrukwekkende soulartiest. Beïnvloed werd hij door o.a. Otis Redding en James Brown. Twee artiesten die hij ook tot zijn vriendenkring mocht rekenen. Op deze compilatie vind je tevens de allereerste opname van ‘These Arms Of Mine’, geschreven door Otis Redding . Cochran werd algemeen beschouwd als de beste blanke soul- en rhythm & bluesartiest, wat hem de titel ‘The White King Of Soul’ opleverde. Op deze, door Bear Family Records uitgebrachte dubbel-cd, krijg je alle opnames die Wayne maakte in de periode 1959 – 1966. Naast de zeldzame opnames bij lokale labels bevat dit dubbelalbum ook alle opnames die hij maakte voor Chess, Mercury en King. Bovendien krijg je drie uitzonderlijke zeldzame instrumentale songs die hij opnam van zijn band The Rocking Capris. Inclusief de bonustracks bevat deze uitgave 42 tracks. Op de eerste cd presenteert Wayne zich als een rocker van zijn tijd, waar hij zowel in de tragere als in de uptempo songs moeiteloos overtuigt. Wayne zit volledig in zijn songs en wanneer hij vocaal rauw uit de hoek komt, gaan je nekharen recht overeind staan. Wayne Cochran verdiende gewoonweg wereldwijde erkenning.
De tweede cd start met een soulvolle rhythm & bluesversie van ‘The Coo’, nummer dat op de eerste cd in een rock-‘n-rollversie te horen is. Op deze cd wordt de sound door de blazerssectie ook voller wat beter aansluit bij het soulvolle. De invloed van James Brown is duidelijk te horen in Wayne’s performance van ‘Think’. Enorm soulvol, zelfs met wat gospelinvloeden klinkt ‘You Let The Water Running’. De dynamiek en intensiteit die Wayne in de Bob & Earl klassieker ‘Harlem Shuffle’, ‘Somebody Please’ en ‘Get Down With It’ steekt, is ronduit hemels, wat zijn titel ‘The White King Of Soul’ zonder meer rechtvaardigt. In ‘No Rest For The Wicked’ knikt Otis Redding dan weer goedkeurend van achter de hoek.
De bonustracks bestaan uit 3 Cochran composities, uitgevoerd door Bobby Lee Smith, Alice Rozier en Richie Kall en 4 songs van Otis Redding’s hand. Drie daarvan, waaronder ‘These Arms Of Mine’ door hem gezongen, aangevuld met Buddy Leach’s versie van dit nummer.
Duidelijk wordt ook dat Wayne Cochran naast een uitstekende performer ook een neus had voor het schrijven van formidabele songs.
In het 35 pagina’s tellend booklet, van de hand van Bill Dahl, krijg je naast knappe foto’s en illustraties, een uitgebreide biografie. ‘The Bigger The Pompadour…’ is een mooi eerbetoon aan een artiest die meer erkenning verdiende dan hij kreeg.

Wayne Cochran was born on May 10, 1939 in Georgia and died on November 21, 2017 in Florida. Wayne became known for his immense white pompadour hairstyle and for the song 'Last Kiss', the last song he wrote. He started as a young rocker, but later evolved into an impressive soul artist. He was influenced by Otis Redding and James Brown, among others. Two artists he could also count among his circle of friends. On this compilation you will also find the very first recording of 'These Arms Of Mine', written by Otis Redding. Cochran was widely regarded as the best white soul and rhythm & blues artist, earning him the title 'The White King Of Soul'. On this double CD, released by Bear Family Records, you get all the recordings that Wayne made in the period 1959 - 1966. In addition to the rare recordings on local labels, this double album also contains all the recordings he made for Chess, Mercury and King. Plus you get three exceptionally rare instrumental songs recorded by his band The Rocking Capris. Including the bonus tracks, this release contains 42 tracks. On the first CD, Wayne presents himself as a rocker of his time, where he effortlessly convinces in both the slower and uptempo songs. Wayne is completely immersed in his songs and when he comes out vocally raw, the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Wayne Cochran simply deserved worldwide recognition.
The second CD starts with a soulful rhythm & blues version of 'The Coo', a song that can be heard in a rock 'n' roll version on the first CD. On this CD the sound becomes fuller due to the horn section, which fits better with the soulful. The influence of James Brown is clearly heard in Wayne's performance of 'Think'. 'You Let The Water Running' sounds extremely soulful, even with some gospel influences. The dynamics and intensity that Wayne puts into the Bob & Earl classic 'Harlem Shuffle', 'Somebody Please' and 'Get Down With It' is heavenly, which justifies his title 'The White King Of Soul'. In 'No Rest For The Wicked' Otis Redding nods approvingly from behind the corner.
The bonus tracks consist of 3 Cochran compositions, performed by Bobby Lee Smith, Alice Rozier and Richie Kall and 4 songs by Otis Redding. Three of them, including 'These Arms Of Mine' sung by him, supplemented with Buddy Leach's version of this song.
It also becomes clear that Wayne Cochran, in addition to being an excellent performer, also had a knack for writing formidable songs.
In the 35-page booklet, written by Bill Dahl, you receive an extensive biography in addition to beautiful photos and illustrations. 'The Bigger The Pompadour...' is a beautiful tribute to an artist who deserved more recognition than he received.
